East Surrey College Hair and Make-up students kick off 2015 with competition successes

East Surrey College Hair and Media Make-up and Special Effects and Theatrical Make-up students have triumphed in two recent arts competitions.

The Regional Heats of the Annual Association of Hairdressers & Therapists competition resulted in eight students qualifying for the AHT National Finals in Blackpool later this March.

First places were awarded to Hannah Callaghan for ‘Gender Transformation’, and team presentation, Jemma Hackshaw, Chloe Morris and Taylor Carey in ‘Night at the Theatre.’

At the 2015 Professional Beauty event at ExCel, students impressed industry experienced judges by demonstrating their creative skills in the Warpaint Make-up competition.

The College won the Overall Best College Professional Beauty with Jemma Hackshaw ensuring East Surrey won first place in the Editorial category for the third consecutive year.

A further two second place awards were awarded to the college in the Real Beauty and Body Painting categories, with an additional third place in Special Effects.

David Rabjohns, Head of Department, said: “Our staff team have exceptionally strong, current industry knowledge, with highly developed skills and expertise that bring relevant industry experience into the learning environment.

“National skills competitions are a terrific way to raise the aspirations of our students, give them a fantastic experience and really showcase what we do at East Surrey College.”
