Reigate Caves

The Surrey town of Reigate is renowned for its mysterious “caves” that wind beneath the town centre. While these intriguing passages are commonly called caves, they are in fact historic sand mines that have been excavated over several centuries. The soft sandstone that forms the castle mound overlooking Reigate town centre has been carefully mined, leaving behind a network of tunnels and caverns that tell the story of Reigate’s past.

Although the original Reigate Castle no longer stands, the mound and many of its historic excavations remain, collectively known as the Reigate Caves.
